Tevez Better than Dzeko as Aguero Partner

Edin Dzeko may have opened the scoring against Liverpool last weekend, but his all-round game was disappointing, and it's still difficult to find evidence of a promising partnership between he and Sergio Aguero.

City were lucky to snatch a point against Brendan Rodgers' side, and it was frustrating to see Carlos Tevez left on the bench throughout. Another feature of City's game was their lack of pressing high up: Dzeko sitting down and feigning injury as Liverpool made it 1-1 was a fine example of that. On the other hand, Tevez brings boundless energy.

Tevez also boasts a fine partnership with Aguero, where the roles are more obviously defined. Tevez drifts around in the hole, while Aguero plays upfront and sprints in behind the opposition defence. His acceleration will be crucial against a Southampton side that are pressing heavily and using a high defensive line under Mauricio Pochettino, despite the lack of pace from their central defenders.

Tevez's commitment to closing down is another key feature. City can't afford to play another game where the opposition are simply more energetic in the opposition half and force defensive mistakes more readily.

For all Dzeko's quality, he still seems better suited as a substitute. His height and ability with his back to goals makes him the perfect Plan B, when the opposition no longer press, and are sitting deep to guard against pace in behind, Dzeko provides a different option. All three forwards will have more opportunities following Mario Balotelli's departure, but Aguero and Tevez together makes sense this weekend.

I beg to differ. The Aguero-Tevez partnership has been consistently overrated. Since the Newcastle away game on May 6th, in the 11 premier league games in which they started together, City were winning in only 3 of those games when the partnership was broken by substitution. Edin Dzeko deserves to start regularly. There is no comparison between the goal scoring performances of Dzeko and Tevez. In this season's premier league, Dzeko's strike rate is 100 minutes per goal, with a clear-cut chance conversion rate of 23%. In contrast, Tevez's strike rate is 218 minutes per goal, with a conversion rate of 14%. In fact, Tevez is a much less capable striker than the media caricature: ignoring penalties, his strike rate has been 205 minutes per goal over his entire premier league career and 232 minutes per goal for his UEFA champions league career. By inspiring lesser players through his industry, Tevez can, indeed, be a superb player in an average side. (After his 2009-10 season for City, I wanted to call our new puppy after him but my wife would not agree!). However, surrounded by quality players, his essential selfishness becomes a serious issue. Heavily involved in City’s attacks, he nevertheless rarely passes to other strikers and then normally does so only when he sees a return pass in the offing. In the Arsenal game, Dzeko put Tevez clear through one-on-one with the goal keeper. When has Tevez put Dzeko clear through in the last two years? After Sergio Aguero came on for the last ten minutes of the recent Fulham game, Dzeko put him clear through on two occasions. When has Tevez put Aguero clear through? I can recall Tevez creating clear-cut chances for Milner, for Silva, for Richards, --- but not wittingly doing so for Adebayor or for Balotelli or for Dzeko or for Aguero.
