When Fulham announced the loan transfer of Emmanuel Frimpong for the remainder of the season, I was surprised and thought it was slightly uninspiring. Maybe it was the timing? It was loan deal was confirmed literally the day after Martin Jol hinted his attentions to be adventurous in the transfer market with 'one or two surprises'.
Was Frimpong one of Jol's supposed two targets? With no major signings throughout January, it was probably just an immediate reaction of disappointment, when in truth, it's not a bad move.
Jol was rumoured to be on a tight budget for the January transfer window that seemingly has no value, and he stated his intentions to sign unsettled players who are easily available; similar to last year when he signed Pavel Pogrebnyak. So realistically we shouldn't complain about the Frimpong loan deal and there're several days left for Jol to strengthen the squad.
As for Frimpong himself, he seems to be the spotlight for his rapping and 'dench' merchandising career rather than his footballing progress; very Ryan Babel-esque. However, Frimpong is only 21 and he should be under good guidance at Fulham.
While the loan move is influenced by Mahamadou Diarra's on-going injuries, Frimpong will hopefully provide competition in midfield with some added aggressiveness that Fulham have lacked. Steve Sidwell and Chris Baird usually rely on intercepting play, while Giorgos Karagounis is at the age where he conserves his energy and remains wary of getting stuck into challenges.
Frimpong can add some good balance and he will hopefully be as industrious as his first major breakthrough on his loan spell at Wolves; bar injuries of course. His supposed immature mentality is not our problem as long if he provides top performances in a Fulham shirt for the remainder of the season. Looking at the list of his previous matches, he has never completed 90 minutes of Premier League football that suggests he could be rotated. The thought of the midfield partnership of youthful drive and experienced composure sounds hopeful for now.
We got another midfielder at last, he may not be the creative type that we wanted, but there's still time. As the influx of rumours came in, not once did we hear Frimpong's name mentioned and that should conclude Fulham do their business discretely. Hopefully Jol can come up with a pleasantly surprising
