Reading News

We asked every PickOurTeam writer to give their honest opinions on how their team fared this season. Here are the views of Reading writer Jon Arnold:

Season in Summary

There were many, many near misses. Too many, obviously, and Reading won't be around next year. There was a brief bit of hope after the holidays when the…

Was this Reading’s greatest victory of the season? We’ve only had six of them, so it hardly has a lot of competition, but I think I saw enough to proclaim this game our most impressive of the season.

Sure, there were heady times in January, the comebacks against West Brom and Newcastle, in particular. But all…

Late goals were the order of the weekend as the season entered its crucial phase: Gareth Bale and Juan Mata gave Spurs and Chelsea much-needed late wins in their quests for Champions League qualification, while Gabby Agbonlahor scored a vital late goal for Aston Villa at Norwich. Wigan also needed a late winner to keep…

There was not the usual heartbreak that comes after suffering relegation. There was no shock, just a dull antipathy to the depressing inevitability of the whole situation.

There was an unfortunate irony you can't help but laugh at that Reading and QPR should be the ones to relegate one another in a dire, half-hearted 0-0 draw.…

QPR and Reading sealed their relegation fate while Wigan, Stoke and Aston Villa picked up valuable points in their fight against the drop. At the other end of the table, Robin van Persie scored on his return to the Emirates, while there were wins for Chelsea and Manchester City as Spurs dropped points in the…

Reading's squad has been too weak for the Premier League, that much is obvious. But, with relegation beckoning, I'd also argue that in its current state, it's not good enough to make a swift return to the top tier, which must surely be the sole objective for Adkins next season.

So, where do Reading need to…

Manchester United got back to winning ways, Arsenal got out of jail and QPR lost without a whimper on a weekend where things got very tense at both ends of the table. Chelsea and Spurs are level on points in the race for fourth spot while Stoke's defeat to Manchester United plunges them into the…

Oh, to be a fly on the wall of Nigel Adkins' new office in the Madejski Stadium. It would be fascinating to be able to peer over his shoulder and take a peek at his team notes for Saturday's game against Arsenal.

For this, Adkins' maiden game in charge of Reading, proposes an interesting dilemma: how…

It could have been tiki-taka disciple Luis Enrique, fiery fascist Di Canio or Champions League winning Di Matteo. Advocaat? Yeah, probably. Solskjaer? Sure. Even our very own Jimmy Kebe was at one point 33/1 to move from the right of midfield and into the manager's chair (a funny joke, so kudos to whoever made that…

It's a difficult question to answer, obviously, given that even Anton Zingarevich, a man with the powers to woo a Victoria Secret model, hasn't yet come up with the answer.

Ideally, it would be McDermott with added nous, creativity and adaptability, alas, that seems unlikely. It, too, seems unlikely that anyone in the media has…

I was halfway through writing an article entitled, 'Should Brian McDermott take the blame for Reading's inevitable relegation?' when I heard of his sacking. After the initial furore that ensued once the announcement was made I went back to my article and reread it. I'd written it from an objective point of view and, although…

Against Everton, and with a big Russian striker-sized hole in its team, Reading reverted back to the 4-4-2 formation that was an unequivocal disaster at the beginning of the campaign. Its result left Royals fans feeling depressed and void of hope.

Brian McDermott isn't a foolish man, so he won't go back to that formation again…

So, as if Reading's performance against Wigan wasn't bad enough, Pavel Pogrebnyak went and got himself sent off and will now be missing for the next three games. This is bad for two reasons, one: he'll be missing for three important games; two: for the next three games his absence from the team-sheet will be…

Reading are almost in the home straight. There are just 12 league fixtures left until the curtain comes down on another Premier League season and it's time to look at those games and decide whether the mighty Royals can stay up or not. But in order to predict the future, we must first look to…

Adam Le Fondre's Player Of The Month award and Brian McDermott's Manager Of The Month award are richly deserved and mark the end of a great January for the Royals.

The awards are the icing, cherry and the ganache (for you, The Great British Bake Off fans) on the cake, to top off a month that…

Another decisive weekend of action saw leaders Manchester United extend the gap at the top while teams around QPR at the bottom, including Reading, Aston Villa and Wigan, also picked up points. The race for third place is now interesting after Chelsea lost to Newcastle, with Spurs one point back, and Arsenal and Everton knocking on the door of…

A dramatic midweek round of action at the top and the bottom saw Manchester United extend their lead at the top to seven points while Aston Villa continued their descent into the danger-zone with a home loss to Newcastle. Reading frustrated Chelsea, Norwich held Spurs while Arsenal and Liverpool played out a thrilling 2-2 draw…

If Reading sign Tom Ince, it would be an open letter of intent to the rest of the Premier League. In big, bold letters it would read: READING ARE NOT GOING DOWN WITHOUT A FIGHT. And to really compound the message, maybe Tom Ince could deliver it to each club himself, perhaps doing some keepy-uppies at the same time.

Leaving…

Brian McDermott has a selection dilemma for the home match with Chelsea: he's started the last two matches with a 4-5-1 formation. However, in both matches he's changed to a 4-4-2 formation midway through the second half, with fantastic results. First, Reading won 3-2 at home to West Brom, having trailed 2-0, and then they came back from 1-0…

Prior to the season, there were some fears from Reading fans that some players who had helped the Royals to the Championship title were not up to snuff for the Premier League. Those fears turned out to be grounded in a good deal of reality as Reading stumbled out of the gate and is currently mired in a battle…
