Stoke Have Five Games to Fight for Survival

The Stoke City fan base is currently divided; there are those that believe the manager should go now and those that believe he should be given until the end of the season, and beyond, to put things right. There isn't much middle ground to be had and as the rut continues, the numbers falling into the former of the two groups is growing by the day. It is generally accepted, regardless of which side of the fence the fans are on, that we shouldn't be in the position that we are currently in. At the turn of the year we were sitting pretty in 10th on the back of a tremendous showing in the 3-1 victory over Liverpool at The Britannia Stadium. We had 29 points on the board with 18 games remaining. We required just 11 more points from the remaining 18 games (or an average of around 0.6 points per game) to reach the magical 40 point barrier. It never should have come to this but we are now well and truly in the relegation dogfight. In the 13 Premier League games played throughout 2013, we have picked up a measly 5 points, scoring just 7 goals along the way. That is relegation form against any yardstick. This isn't a problem that has crept up on us overnight either. A number of fans have been voicing concerns for a good while now, the issues affecting us go back for the best part of two years. This isn't a time to go over old ground though. Ignoring everything that has gone, and accepting the situation as it is, we are now in a five-game season to secure our status in the Premier League. Looking at our fixtures, they're about as good as we could've hoped for. The old adage "there are no easy game in the league" certainly applies but if you look at the games we have left, you have to say that they are very favourable and Tony Pulis couldn't really have hoped for better. We have 3 away games left to play. We haven't got to play the likes of Man Utd, Man City and Chelsea. It isn't like we have to play 2 of them, or even 1 of them. We have no top teams left to play on our travels and that's about as good as it gets. You can argue that we are playing teams in a fight for survival but if it's a choice between playing QPR and Southampton or Chelsea and Man City, we'd be snapping hands off for the first option every day of the week. Of the 2 home games we have left, we have Norwich left to play. Their away record is equally as poor as ours, having won only once on the road all Season. The only top team we have left to play is Spurs, and not so long ago we'd have been confident of giving them, or anybody else for that matter, a good game at The Brit. Accepting everything as it currently is, and taking into consideration our remaining fixtures, in comparison to some of the other teams still in the fight at the bottom, if we do go down then we can have absolutely no complaints. Furthermore, if we do go down, then Tony Pulis can have no grievances; he can have no qualms over "not getting the breaks". It is still in our hands and now is a time to go out, be positive and seize the initiative. No more bemoaning bad luck; fortune favours the brave and the Manager needs to start making his own luck. If Peter Coates is going to stand by him, and he can't get enough points over the last 5 games to keep us up, then surely he has to go? All it requires is a bit of positivity from the Manager, the correct team selections (two wingers in the side for a start) and we can still get the job done. What will kill us is negativity and the fear of failure. We'll get a good indication of which way it is going to go on Saturday when we travel to QPR. We have to go there and take the game to them. If we play for a point, we'll more than likely leave with none. If we find ourselves in the bottom three come 5.45pm on May 19th then that will represent mismanagement on a colossal scale. He's had the financial backing and the kind of time and patience not afforded most Managers in this league. Tony Pulis can have no excuses whatsoever. If we go down, the buck stops with him.

Stoke City News

Well, it's finally happened. Tony Pulis has left. I've been calling for change for a long time but I have to admit that as the news broke, it came as a big shock.

I do still think it is the right decision though, I believe we need a change and a fresh approach over the Summer.…

One point gained or two points lost? One thing is for certain, our inability to finish off a beaten Sunderland side in that second half proved exactly why we will never succeed under Pulis. I think everyone would have snapped your hand off at a point before kick off considering that Sunderland are in a…

Three games ago it was looking a very precarious situation. Out of form, struggling to score and conceding at the other end; the outlook wasn’t very bright as we got dragged into a relegation fight at the wrong end of the league.

7 points from the last nine and the situation looks a great deal healthier.…

Not even the most optimistic of Stoke fans predicted that we would have beaten QPR on Saturday: they could not possibly have done. There were two sides desperate to claim that vital three points they needed to have a positive end to their otherwise poor seasons; in our case to save it and in theirs…

There were a few positives to be had from our trip to Loftus Road over the weekend. The biggest of them all being the three points chalked up, only the second on our travels all season. It wasn't a brilliant showing by any stretch of the imagination but when you're in the thick of a…

It’s been a rough few weeks for Stoke manager Tony Pulis, as the club fights to stave off the threat of relegation, while pressure on his own position has increased in the face of fans’ protests. With a home game against Manchester United this weekend, POT’s intrepid Iain Macintosh looked into his crystal ball and…

As a mere supporter, I don't know the internal affairs of my club and quite frankly, I have never previously wanted to. I should imagine this is the same for all of the 92 league clubs in England. It is times like these, when something is quite clearly amiss, that I wish I did. I wish the club…

With the international games done and dusted it's time to turn our attentions, once again, to Premier League action. This weekend sees the Potters travel to Goodison Park to face a tough test against David Moyes' Everton side. I'm pretty sure fans up and down the country will be chalking this one down as a…

There was drama at both ends of the Premier League table as Man City's title challenge all but ended while Spurs continued their slump as the race for fourth hots up. Down at the bottom, Aston Villa won their second straight game to halt QPR's renaissance, while Wigan pipped Newcastle in a controversial game at…

When we got promoted back in 2008, having a Premier League team represent this city really was the stuff of dreams. For once, Stoke-on-Trent had reasons to be cheerful and thousands of people lined the streets in celebration to welcome Stoke City to the promised land of the Premier League. A hard working city represented…

A growing number of Stoke City fans have started to lose patience with the direction the club is currently heading under the guidance of the manager Tony Pulis. On the face of it, that may sound like a ridiculous notion. In recent years we've been promoted to the Premier League, secured our status as a…

For the fifth season, Stoke's away performances and results have been nothing short of woeful and if anything, we are moving in the wrong direction.

During our first season in the Premier League (2008-09) we managed just two away victories in 19 games. It was disappointing but most fans understood the task we faced and we…

Stoke City may currently sit tenth in the Premier League but if you ask most Potters fans right now, they will tell you that performances haven't been great recently, especially away from home. There is an air of gloom around the club with some of the fans crying out for a bit more creativity and…

So far this season, Stoke City manager Tony Pulis has utilised two separate systems. He can use three central midfielders and play Jon Walters on the right, or he can field only two players in the centre, push Walters behind the main striker, and play two proper wingers.

It's surprising Pulis has used the former so…

Smith and Bloor. Cranson and Overson. Add to that, Shawcross and Huth. These are the three greatest centre-back pairings Stoke City has ever seen. The latter two have already earned their places amongst that esteemed list in my eyes.

I just missed out on 92-93 promotion side built around Cranson and Overson and certainly not…

It doesn’t always matter how you get there, sometimes the result takes precedence over the performance that gets you over the finish line. Saturday's match against Reading was a prime example of such an occasion.

Without a league win since the thumping of Liverpool on Boxing Day at the Britannia Stadium, we desperately needed to chalk…

It wasn't a perfect transfer window for Stoke City. We certainly didn't address some of the areas that needed immediate attention, but in Jack Butland, we have possibly pulled off the deal of the month. Still just 19 years old, with an England cap already to his name, Butland is widely regarded as the future…

With the imminent capture of starlet Brek Shea from FC Dallas who will join fellow USA international Geoff Cameron at the club, it seems we have developed quite a connection with Major League Soccer over the past year. Brek Shea is only 22, is already capped by the USA national side 15 times and will join Stoke for what…

Less than a month ago, Stoke City were on a ten-match unbeaten Premier League run and Tony Pulis could do no wrong in the eyes of Potters fans. That run included tough fixtures against Liverpool, Spurs and Everton, not forgetting a tremendous comeback with ten men against Southampton, showing great character to recover having been 3-1 down.

In addition to…
