High RTP Slots: What the Payout Figure Means and Where to Find It

The best paying slots are the ones running the highest setting at the casino you actually use. That figure is on the game screen, not in a league table.

High RTP slots

High RTP slots are games whose return to player, the long-run share of stakes paid back as winnings, sits above the usual band of roughly 94% to 96%. The catch is that many slots exist in several RTP versions, so the best paying slot is the one running its highest setting at your casino, and the only reliable place to check is the game's own information screen.

That is why Pick Our Team does not print a table of "highest RTP online slots". A list of headline figures would be wrong at half the casinos you might play them at.

Form reads licence, markets, payments, safer-play tools, terms; 1 is best. How we rate. 18+ only.

We rank these on licence quality and terms, not on RTP claims, since none publishes a full RTP list we could verify. All are regulated abroad: there is no Irish gaming licence to hold until the GRAI opens gaming licensing, expected in early 2027. 18+ only.

High RTP slots in euro terms

RTP is easiest to grasp as money. Take 1,000 spins at EUR 1, a total of EUR 1,000 staked.

RTP Long-run return House margin
97% EUR 970 EUR 30
96% EUR 960 EUR 40
94% EUR 940 EUR 60
92% EUR 920 EUR 80

The gap between 96% and 92% doubles the expected cost of the same evening, from EUR 40 to EUR 80. That is the whole case for caring about RTP. What the table cannot show is the spread: over 1,000 spins the actual result can land far from those averages, in either direction.

Why one slot can pay differently at two casinos

Large providers commonly offer casinos a choice of RTP settings for the same title, and the casino picks which version to run. The game looks identical; the maths underneath is not. This is why a search for the Book of Dead RTP turns up more than one number, and why a figure quoted on a review site, ours included, can only ever be the provider's published range.

Our slot files, such as Book of Dead, give the provider's figures where they are published. The figure that counts is the one your casino displays.

How to check the RTP yourself

  1. Open the game in real-money mode, not demo.
  2. Find the information or paytable screen, usually behind an "i" or a menu icon.
  3. Look for "return to player" or "theoretical RTP" near the end of the rules text.
  4. If it is missing, ask the casino's support team in writing and keep the reply.

A casino that will not tell you the RTP of a game it sells has told you something else instead.

Screenshot the figure when you find it. Settings can change when a casino updates its lobby, and a dated screenshot is the only record you will have if you later want to compare versions or raise a question with the operator. Because every slot site open to Irish players is regulated abroad, a complaint about a misstated figure goes to the foreign regulator named in the footer, so note that too.

Best paying slot sites: what to look for

A site cannot change a game's maths beyond choosing its setting, so the best paying slot sites are the ones that run high settings and say so. Useful signs: RTP shown on every game's information screen, a published list of game RTPs, and withdrawal terms without fees. Less useful: a banner promising the "highest RTP casino" without a single figure to back it.

Low volatility, high RTP: the gentle option

RTP says how much comes back; volatility says how. A low-volatility, high-RTP slot returns money in frequent small amounts, which stretches a budget and suits a player who wants a long session for a fixed sum. A high-volatility game with the same RTP pays in rarer, larger lumps, and most sessions finish down. Providers usually state volatility as low, medium or high, sometimes on a five-point scale, on the game's information page.

The highest RTP casino games are not slots

If return is what matters most, slots are rarely the best table in the house. European roulette has one zero among 37 pockets, which works out at an RTP of 97.30% and a house edge of 2.70% on standard bets (1 in 37). Blackjack played to correct basic strategy under good rules returns more again, though the figure depends on the table rules. See roulette, blackjack and our list of best payout casinos for the details.

What RTP will not do for you

No RTP figure makes a slot beatable. A machine is never "due", a game is not "hot" because someone else just won, and no pattern of stakes changes the margin. The how to win at slots guide takes the common myths apart one by one. Pick a game you enjoy at the highest setting you can find, decide in advance what the evening is worth to you, and stop there. If that decision keeps getting harder, our safer gambling notes are a sensible next read.

Readers' questions

What counts as a high RTP slot?
Anything above about 96% is high for a slot; many popular games run between 94% and 96%. Always check the version your casino runs, since one title can come in several settings.
What is the Book of Dead RTP?
It depends on the version the casino has chosen, which is why different sites quote different numbers. Open the game in real-money mode and read the information screen.
What is the RTP of roulette?
Single-zero European roulette returns 97.30% on standard bets, a house edge of 2.70%. Double-zero versions return less.
Are high RTP slots better for short sessions?
They cost less on average, but over a short session luck dominates. Volatility matters more to how a single evening feels.
