Betting and Casino Guides: How to Play, How It Pays

This is the desk's guides section: how to play casino games and place the common bets, explained in plain arithmetic. Start with the guide that matches your question below; each one answers it in the first lines and then shows the working.

Two principles run through every page here. First, no guide claims a way to beat a game with a house edge; where such claims exist, we explain why they fail. Second, the Irish legal position is stated as it stands in October 2026: bookmakers are licensed by the GRAI, online casinos are not yet licensed in Ireland at all. Everything here is for readers aged 18+.

Betting guides

The betting half of the desk, listed above, works through the questions that come up at every counter. Each-way covers the two-bets-in-one rule and the place terms that decide whether a placed horse still costs you money. Fractional odds turns 5/2 and 4/6 into decimal and American prices and into the chance a price implies. Accumulators sets out how doubles, Yankees and Lucky 15s are built, what they cost and what they return. The bet calculator does those sums for any stake. Gambling tax explains why Irish winnings are tax-free and who pays betting duty instead.

How casino machines work

Call it a slot, a fruit machine, a gambling machine or, in Australia, a pokie: the engine is the same. A random number generator settles each spin the moment you press the button, and the paytable is designed to return less than it takes. That is the honest answer to how to win on a gambling machine: in the long run you cannot, and in the short run luck decides. The full explanation, with RTP, volatility and the myths, is in how to win at slots.

Playing online slot machines follows the same rules, with the added step of choosing a site. No Irish online casino licence exists yet; gaming licensing is expected in early 2027, and casinos open to Irish players run under foreign licences. Note too that unlicensed gaming machines in pubs are still a matter for the Gaming and Lotteries Act 1956 and the Gardai, not for the new GRAI regime.

Progressive jackpot meaning

A progressive jackpot is a pot fed by a fraction of every stake across a network of linked games; it climbs until someone lands it, then drops back to a starting figure. Funding the pot usually trims the everyday return, and some games pay the top prize only at a qualifying stake. Read the rules screen before chasing one.

How to play casino games beyond the slots

Roulette

European roulette has 37 pockets, numbers 1 to 36 and a single zero. A straight-up bet on one number pays 35 to 1, so the fair price would be 36 to 1; that one-pocket gap is the house edge, 1 in 37 or about 2.7%. American wheels add a double zero and a bigger edge. How to play European roulette, the outside bets and why betting systems do not change the edge are covered on our roulette page.

Bingo

Online bingo sells tickets for scheduled games in rooms; numbers are called automatically and tickets are daubed for you, so the only decisions are which room and how many tickets. More tickets raise your share of a pot and the cost in the same proportion. Rooms, formats and sites are on the bingo desk.

Poker

Poker is the exception on the casino floor: in player-versus-player games you play against other people and the house takes a rake, so skill matters over time. Online poker strategies start with position, starting-hand selection and bankroll discipline rather than any secret. Video poker and casino poker variants, played against the house, keep a fixed edge like any table game.

Crash games

Crash games, the format popularised by titles such as Aviator, show a multiplier that climbs until it stops at a random point; you cash out before the crash or lose the stake. The crash point is random, and the published return still sits below 100%. Patterns in past rounds do not predict the next.

How to play casino online with real money

The steps are the same at any site: confirm your age and identity, set a deposit limit before your first deposit, read the terms of any bonus, and check which licence the site holds. Since gaming licences are not yet issued in Ireland, that licence will be foreign. Compare options on our casinos pages, where the ranking reflects the foreign licence and the terms rather than the size of the welcome offer.

Guides explain how a game pays; they do not make it pay. Treat any stake as the price of entertainment, keep to a limit, and if gambling stops being that, our responsible gambling page lists Irish help that is free and confidential.
