Casino free spins are a fixed number of slot spins, at a fixed stake, on games the casino chooses. The value of an offer is the number of spins multiplied by the stake per spin, less whatever the wagering on the winnings takes back, and that sum is usually smaller than the banner suggests.
How casino free spins work
When you claim free spins, the casino credits a batch of spins to one or more named slots. Each spin is played at a stake the casino sets, commonly the game's minimum. You do not choose the coin size or the number of lines. The reels behave exactly as they do for paid spins; the only difference is who pays for the stake.
Winnings from the batch are then pooled. Depending on the terms they are paid as cash, as bonus funds with a wagering requirement, or as bonus funds with a cap on what you can withdraw. The difference between those three outcomes is the whole value of the offer.
A worked example
Say a casino offers 40 spins at EUR 0.25 each. The total stake is EUR 10. If the spins return EUR 9.60, roughly what a 96% slot gives back on average, and the terms apply 40x wagering to those winnings, you would need to stake EUR 384 before withdrawing. On the same slot that turnover is expected to cost about EUR 15.36, more than the winnings themselves. Paid as cash instead, the EUR 9.60 would simply be yours.
Free spins deposit bonus or free spins on registration
Most free spins arrive with a first deposit. The casino pays out the spins once a qualifying deposit clears, sometimes in daily batches over several days, sometimes alongside a matched bonus. Deposit spins tend to carry lighter conditions than spins given for nothing, because the casino already has a paying customer.
Free spins on registration, with no deposit, are the opposite. The stake per spin is low, the eligible game is fixed, and the winnings are usually capped and wagered. They also arrive before you have verified your identity, and any withdrawal will wait until you do. Our page on free spins with no deposit goes through those conditions one by one.
Wager-free spins
A growing share of offers pay spin winnings as cash. These no wagering free spins are usually fewer in number and often still need a deposit, but the arithmetic is honest: what the reels give back is what you can withdraw. Given the choice, we would take fewer spins without wagering over more spins with it.
Which slots the spins land on
Casinos attach free spins to specific titles, often a well-known release from a large studio or a game the casino is promoting that month. The slot's published return to player and volatility matter. A high-volatility slot turns most batches of spins into very little and a few into a lot; a low-volatility one returns small amounts more often. Under a cash cap the big hit gets cut down anyway, which takes some of the shine off high volatility. Our slots section lists provider figures for the main games.
Free spins in Ireland: licence and eligibility
No casino holds an Irish gaming licence, because the GRAI has not started issuing them; that is expected in early 2027. Free spins offered to Irish players come from casinos licensed in Malta, Gibraltar or Great Britain, and the terms that count are the ones on the operator's own site. Check that Ireland is named as eligible. Many spins offers are written for British players and say so in the first line of the terms.
Among the brands in our data, Megarush is licensed by the Malta Gaming Authority under MGA/CRP/591/2018, carries a large slot and live casino library and publishes deposit, wager, loss and time limits. Playzee and Casilando, both White Hat Gaming brands under Malta licence MGA/B2C/370/2017, are slot-led casinos with no sportsbook. None of these is an Irish licence. Current spins offers, where published, are in each brand's form box.

Coins, wheels and social casino spins
Plenty of searches for free spins and coins, or a free spin wheel, are about social casino apps rather than real-money casinos. In those apps the spins and coins have no cash value and cannot be withdrawn. They are entertainment priced in virtual currency, and the in-app shop sells more of it for real money. If a site promises free spins that pay out in gold cash or coins, read whether anything at all can be withdrawn. Usually nothing can.
A short checklist before you claim
- Stake per spin and number of spins: multiply them for the real value.
- Eligible slot: one game or several, and its published RTP.
- What winnings become: cash, or bonus funds with wagering.
- Cash cap on winnings, if any.
- Expiry for the spins and for any bonus funds they produce.
- Whether Ireland is an eligible country.
Spins are for players 18+. Once winnings meet a wagering requirement, free spins become ordinary gambling with your own time and money; set a limit on what you will deposit to clear them, and use the tools on our responsible gambling page if that limit starts to slide.
Readers' questions
- How much are free spins actually worth?
- Multiply the number of spins by the stake per spin. As a worked example, 50 spins at EUR 0.20 are EUR 10 of stake. Wagering on the winnings then reduces what you can expect to withdraw.
- Can I choose which slot to use my free spins on?
- Rarely. The casino names the eligible game, or a short list of games, in the offer terms, and the spins appear only there.
- Do free spins winnings count as cash?
- Only on wager-free offers. Otherwise winnings are credited as bonus funds and must be wagered a set number of times, often with a cap on the final withdrawal.
- Are free spins available to players in Ireland?
- Many are, from casinos licensed in Malta, Gibraltar or Great Britain. Check that the terms name Ireland as eligible; some spins promotions are for British players only.
