Betfair Review: Sportsbook, Exchange and Two Irish Licences
Betfair is the rare brand with two separate GRAI licences, one for its fixed-odds book and one for the exchange. Racing is the strength; payments and terms we could not pin down.

Betfair is licensed in Ireland for betting, and it holds two licences rather than one. The sportsbook runs under a GRAI remote betting licence held by PPB Counterparty Services Limited; the Betfair Exchange has its own remote betting intermediary licence, held by Betfair International plc, both dated from 11 August 2026.
That makes this Betfair review a review of two products sharing a login. The fixed-odds book behaves like any bookmaker. The exchange lets punters bet against each other, and it has its own page: our Betfair Exchange guide covers laying, commission and the sums.
Betfair licence detail: who answers for what
| Product | Licence holder | GRAI category |
|---|---|---|
| Betfair sportsbook | PPB Counterparty Services Limited | Remote betting, GRAI-1003-RB-26-0001 |
| Betfair Exchange | Betfair International plc | Remote betting intermediary, GRAI-1074-RBI-26-0001 |
| Casino, poker, bingo | Not covered by either | No Irish gaming licence exists yet |
Both entries run to August 2029. Before July 2026 the same two companies sat on Revenue's list of remote bookmakers and intermediaries; Revenue has since stopped issuing those licences, and the GRAI register is now the one that counts. The full licence text as we hold it: GRAI remote betting licence GRAI-1003-RB-26-0001 (PPB Counterparty Services Limited), valid 2026-08-11 to 2029-08-10; GRAI remote betting intermediary licence GRAI-1074-RBI-26-0001 (Betfair International plc), valid 2026-08-11 to 2029-08-10.
The sportsbook licence holder is the same company that holds Paddy Power's, because both brands belong to Flutter Entertainment. One regulator, one corporate parent, separate prices and promotions. Our licensing explainer sets out what the two GRAI categories mean.
Betfair sportsbook betting compared with the exchange
A search for Betfair sports or the Betfair sportsbook usually comes from someone who has used the exchange and wants a plain fixed price instead. The difference is simple. On the sportsbook Betfair sets the odds and takes your bet, as Paddy Power or any high-street firm would. On the exchange another customer takes it, and Betfair charges commission on net winnings.
Which to use depends on the bet. Sportsbook concessions such as a best-odds promise, enhanced place terms or acca offers belong to the fixed-odds side. The exchange can show a bigger price on a well-traded race, but there is no bookmaker concession to fall back on, and commission comes off a winning bet.
Betfair horse racing and the best-odds promise
Racing sits at the centre of the Betfair book. The Irish App Store listing for the sportsbook covers horse and greyhound racing and carries a best-odds promise on all UK and Irish racing: take a price, and if the starting price is bigger, a winner is paid at the SP. Qualifying races, cut-off times and any cap sit in the operator's terms, which we could not read from our end.
Worked example: EUR 20 to win at 5/2. The horse wins and the SP is 3/1. At the taken price the return is EUR 70 (EUR 50 profit plus the stake); at the SP it is EUR 80. Had the price shortened to 2/1, you keep the 5/2 and the EUR 70. Our BOG comparison lines up the licensed firms that make the same promise.
Betfair racing tips and the Paul Nicholls searches
A fair slice of Betfair searches are for tips rather than odds: Betfair racing tips, horse racing tips, and the trainer Paul Nicholls, whose name is searched alongside the brand. Whatever a bookmaker publishes as a tip, treat it as opinion from a firm that profits when you bet. We publish no tips for named horses; our racing desk carries the day's cards and results through a feed.
Football, golf and the tipster pages
Betfair football tips, soccer tips and the Betfair tipster pages all draw steady search traffic. Read them as you would a newspaper preview: useful for team news, no guide to value. Market depth for a Premier League match is not the question for Irish punters; the question is what happens on a League of Ireland night or a mid-week golf event, and we have no confirmed market counts for either.
For golf the exchange is worth knowing about, because outright markets on a 150-man field can trade at prices well above a bookmaker's each-way quote. Our golf tips page explains how each-way terms on golf outrights work.
The forum, the community and Betfair login
Searches for the Betfair forum and community pages tend to come from exchange users comparing notes on markets and settlement. What is posted there is customer opinion, not operator policy. If a bet is settled wrongly, the route is a complaint to Betfair first and then to the GRAI, which has had complaint and enforcement powers since February 2026.
Betfair login problems are a separate matter. The Irish App Store listing puts the sportsbook and the Exchange in a single app. Log in only through the official app or the address you have typed yourself, never through a link in a message.
Betfair 365 is two different firms
The search "betfair 365" mixes two companies. Betfair is part of Flutter; bet365 is a separate bookmaker licensed through Hillside (Europe) ENC. Accounts, balances and terms do not cross over. Our bet365 review covers the other one.
Casino, poker and bingo under the Betfair name
Betfair Casino exists as a separate app. It is not covered by either GRAI licence, because the GRAI has not issued any gaming licence and expects to start in early 2027. We could not confirm which foreign licence covers Irish players on the casino side, nor whether Betfair poker or bingo is open to Irish accounts in October 2026. Until the operator's own terms state the regulator, a casino complaint has no Irish home.
Deposits, withdrawals and the welcome offer
We hold no confirmed payment list for Betfair in Ireland; the operator's site could not be fetched during research. Credit cards are out regardless, since section 165 of the 2024 Act bans credit for gambling. Minimum deposit: . Stated withdrawal time: . A blank means no confirmed figure.
The App Store listing quotes a new-customer offer in sterling only. The euro version, if one is running, reads: . Winnings are not taxed in Ireland; the operator pays 2% duty on sportsbook turnover and 25% on exchange commission.
Limits and self-exclusion
As a licensee Betfair must let you set a deposit limit. The national exclusion register that would block you across every licensed bookmaker at once is written into the Act but not yet running, so self-exclusion still happens account by account. Over-18s only; our responsible gambling page lists Irish help.
Betfair verdict
Nap. Two Irish licences, a racing book with a best-odds promise, and a separately licensed exchange under the same name. Its form line drops on payments, tools and terms, and that reflects what we could not confirm rather than anything we found wrong. Check those three in your account settings before the first deposit. 18+.
