The Betfair Exchange is licensed in Ireland as a betting intermediary, separately from the sportsbook. It rewards punters who can do the sums on liability before they press the button.

The Betfair Exchange is open to Irish punters under a GRAI remote betting intermediary licence, GRAI-1074-RBI-26-0001, held by Betfair International plc from 11 August 2026. Exchange betting means you bet against other customers rather than the house, and Betfair takes a commission on net winnings in each market.
The licence is separate from the Betfair sportsbook's, which sits with PPB Counterparty Services Limited. Our Betfair review covers the fixed-odds side.
How Betfair Exchange betting works
Every market has two columns. Back means betting that something will happen, as you would with a bookmaker. Lay means betting that it will not, which makes you the bookmaker for that bet. Prices are decimal and include the stake, so 4.0 is the same as 3/1.
Lay EUR 20 of a backer's money at 4.0 and the arithmetic is: if the horse loses, you keep the EUR 20; if it wins, you pay EUR 60, which is 20 multiplied by (4.0 minus 1). That EUR 60 is your liability, and it is held from your balance until the market settles. The bet slip shows it; read it every time.
Trading out on a price move
Back EUR 10 at 6.0 and watch the price shorten to 3.0. Laying EUR 20 at 3.0 now leaves you EUR 10 up whatever happens: a winner pays EUR 50 on the back and costs EUR 40 on the lay; a loser costs EUR 10 on the back and earns EUR 20 on the lay. The lay stake comes from back stake times back odds divided by lay odds, 10 x 6.0 / 3.0. Commission is then taken from the net profit on that market.
Commission and duty
Betfair sets its commission rate in its own terms, and it can vary by market and customer. We hold no confirmed current rate, so do the sums with the rate shown in your account. Separately, the exchange pays the State 25% of the commission it collects from Irish customers as betting intermediary duty. That is the operator's bill, not yours; winnings carry no tax for the punter.
Betfair Exchange horse racing and each-way
Horse racing draws most of the exchange searches, and racing markets keep trading in-play while the race is run. An exchange does not settle each-way bets as a bookmaker does: you back in the win market and, where the operator opens one, separately in a place market, each at its own price. Check that a place market is running before assuming an each-way equivalent exists. Our each-way guide explains the bookmaker version for comparison.
Greyhounds, golf, snooker and cricket also trade, but thinner markets mean wider gaps between back and lay prices. A price on screen is only an offer until someone matches it.
The app, the API and exchange games
According to the Irish App Store listing, the sportsbook app includes the Exchange, so one download covers both. Download it only from the official App Store or Google Play listing. Searches for the Betfair Exchange API come from people who write betting software; access runs on the operator's developer terms, which we did not review. Whether exchange-style games are open to Irish accounts we could not confirm.
Sign-up offers and free bets
Searches for a Betfair Exchange sign up offer, bonus or free bet are common. The App Store listing quotes an offer in sterling only, and we could not confirm a euro exchange offer. If one is live it shows here: . Read whether an offer pays out as a free bet, a refund or something else, and on which markets it counts.
Lay calculators
A Betfair lay calculator does nothing you cannot do with the two formulas above. Our exchanges page has a liability table and back-lay matching worked through. Laying is betting with your own money at risk, and a long-odds lay can cost many times the stake. Exchange accounts are 18+ only; limits and support are on our responsible gambling page.
Readers' questions

- Yes. Betfair International plc holds GRAI remote betting intermediary licence GRAI-1074-RBI-26-0001, valid from 11 August 2026 to 10 August 2029.
- What is my liability on a lay bet?
- The backer's stake multiplied by the decimal odds minus one. Laying EUR 20 at 4.0 carries EUR 60 of liability.

- Not as a single bet. You back in the win market and, where one is open, in a separate place market at its own price.
