Rugby Betting Tips: Six Nations, URC and Champions Cup
In rugby union the handicap does most of the work, because the favourite usually wins. Bonus points, not just results, decide what Six Nations outright prices are worth.

Rugby betting is mostly handicap betting. The better side wins the large majority of union matches, so the straight result is often too short to bother with, and the market that matters is how many points the favourite wins by.
Our rugby selections appear in the feed below when there is a game worth a view. The rest of this page sets out how the main rugby union markets work, with the Six Nations, the United Rugby Championship and the Champions Cup in mind.
Selections are posted here on match days, with the reasoning and the result afterwards.

Rugby betting on the handicap
A handicap line hands the outsider a start. If Ireland are -7.5 against a visiting side, they must win by eight or more; the half point rules out a push. Bookmakers aim to price both sides of that line close to even money, commonly 10/11. At 10/11 a EUR 11 stake returns EUR 21, which is EUR 10 profit and the stake back.
Winning margin markets cut the result into bands, such as a side to win by 1-12 or 13 or more. They pay bigger prices than the handicap because you have to be right about both the winner and the scale. Read the bands carefully: some operators use 1-7, 8-14 and so on.
Totals work as in any sport: over or under a points line for the match. Weather matters as much as form here. A wet night in Galway or Limerick does not suit a high line.
Six Nations odds and the bonus-point table
The Six Nations brings together England, France, Ireland, Italy, Scotland and Wales. Each plays the others once, fifteen matches over five rounds, from the first weekend of February to mid-March. Ireland's home games are at the Aviva Stadium.
Since 2017 the table has used bonus points: four for a win, two for a draw, one for scoring four or more tries, one for losing by seven or fewer, and three extra for a Grand Slam. That changes how Six Nations outright odds should be read. A side can lose a match narrowly, pick up two bonus points elsewhere and still finish top, which is why a team that drops a game early is rarely as dead in the betting as the result suggests.
Specials sit alongside the outright: Grand Slam, Triple Crown (one Home Nation beating the other three) and the wooden spoon. A worked example of an outright: a side priced at 7/2 returns EUR 45 from a EUR 10 stake if they win the title. Most outright markets are settled on the final table, bonus points included, so the tiebreak rules in the terms are worth a look.
URC and Champions Cup odds
The United Rugby Championship has sixteen teams: four from Ireland (Connacht, Leinster, Munster and Ulster), four from South Africa, four from Wales, two from Scotland and two from Italy. Each plays an 18-match regular season in a single table from September to late spring, and the top eight go into a three-round knockout. Those eight also qualify for the Champions Cup.
The European Rugby Champions Cup takes 24 teams from the English Premiership, the Top 14 and the URC, plus the Challenge Cup winner. Four pools of six lead to a round of 16, quarter-finals, semi-finals and a final in May. Irish sides have won it seven times between them: Leinster four, Munster two and Ulster once.
Two things trip up punters in these competitions. Squad rotation between league and Europe moves handicap lines late, so the price on Thursday may not survive Friday's team sheet. And travel to South Africa in the URC is a factor the market sometimes prices slowly. Neither is a reason to bet; both are reasons to wait for the team news.
Rugby World Cup betting
Rugby World Cup outright markets open years in advance and stay open, so most World Cup betting is ante-post: money down long before the squads are named. Ante-post bets are usually settled as losers if your side goes out early, with no stake back, and the prices reflect that risk. The draw for the pools shapes the outright odds more than any single warm-up result.
Comparing rugby odds
Plenty of people search for a rugby odds checker before a big match, and comparing prices is sound practice. On a handicap the difference between 10/11 and evens on the same line is the bookmaker's margin, and over a season it adds up. We do not publish live odds; they change too quickly to be worth printing. Compare the same line, not just the same match: Ireland -7.5 at evens and Ireland -9.5 at evens are different bets.
Rugby league betting works on the same principles, with thirteen-a-side rules and its own competitions, but it is a small market in Ireland and we do not tip it.
Licensed bookmakers for rugby
Each bookmaker listed holds a GRAI remote betting licence. Any casino the same brand runs sits under a foreign licence, because Ireland has no casino licence yet. Our form figures explain the ordering.

Readers' questions
- What does a 7-point losing bonus mean for Six Nations betting?
- A side that loses by seven or fewer takes one table point. Outright markets settle on the final table, so close defeats still count towards the title.
- Is a rugby handicap bet void if the margin lands exactly on the line?
- Only on whole-number lines, where it is usually a push and stakes are returned. Half-point lines such as -7.5 cannot finish level.
- Which Irish teams play in the URC?
- Connacht, Leinster, Munster and Ulster, four of the sixteen sides.
- Are Rugby World Cup bets refunded if a team is knocked out early?
- Not normally. Outright and ante-post bets lose if the selection goes out, unless the bookmaker's terms say otherwise.
