GAA Betting Tips: Hurling and Gaelic Football

Three markets carry most GAA betting: the three-way result, the handicap and total points. The football two-pointer has changed how the last of those should be read.

GAA

GAA betting comes down to three markets in most cases: the match result, which is usually priced three ways because draws happen, the handicap, and total points. Our daily hurling and football selections sit in the tips feed below; this page explains how those markets are built and what to check before backing one.

We do not print fixtures, throw-in times or scores in the body of the page. County boards move games, and a stale fixture list does more harm than an empty one.

How GAA betting markets are priced

The match result market has three outcomes: home, draw, away. A level game at full time settles as a draw for this market, which is why the draw carries a price at all. Whether extra time counts is a matter for each bookmaker's terms, and they do not all agree, so read the market rules before staking on a knockout tie.

The handicap gives one side a start. A county at -4.5 has to win by five points or more; at +4.5 the other side can lose by four and still land the bet. Three-way handicaps, set on a whole number, add a handicap draw as a third outcome. Prices are fractional; a handicap at 5/6 returns EUR 18.33 from a EUR 10 stake, which is EUR 8.33 profit plus the tenner back. Our fractional odds guide covers the conversion if 5/6 means nothing to you yet.

Total points markets ask whether the combined score goes over or under a line, with every goal counted as three. Team totals work the same way for one county only. A scoreline of 1-14 to 0-16, for the record, is 17 plays 16, a total of 33.

The two-point score and what it does to totals

Gaelic football has played with a two-point score since 2025, made permanent at Special Congress in October 2025 and in force from 1 January 2026. A kick from play or a free that goes over from on or outside the 40m arc is worth two points, provided the kicker's standing foot is on or behind the arc. An orange flag signals it. A '45 is still worth one point. The goal stays at three; the four-point goal trialled at the 2024 interprovincials was dropped.

For a punter the point is arithmetic. A total points line in football now has to allow for scores worth one or two, and old averages compiled before the rule were counted under different sums. Treat any totals argument resting on pre-2025 scoring with suspicion. In the written score the two-pointers sit inside the points figure, so 0-2 can mean a single long-range kick.

Hurling has no two-point score in championship play. Experimental rules announced in September 2026, including two points for a converted sideline cut and a ban on consecutive handpasses, are trials only and do not apply to championship betting until the GAA says otherwise.

GAA fixtures, results and live scores

Searches for GAA fixtures today, GAA results and live GAA scores far outnumber searches for GAA betting. The official lists come from the GAA and from each county board. Club fixtures in Clare, Meath, Tipperary, Offaly, Dublin, Louth, Kerry or Carlow are set locally and change at short notice, often with the weather. The same goes for club scores and results in Cork, Wexford, Cavan or Kildare.

We do not run a live scoreboard. The feed on this page carries the games we have a view on, and nothing more. If a fixture for the weekend has been moved, the county board will have it before anyone else.

The championship year in outline

The split season puts the inter-county game first and the clubs after it. The 2026 pattern, from the GAA's master fixtures schedule, looked like this:

Stage When (2026 pattern)
All-Ireland club finals January
National Leagues Late January to late March (hurling Division 1 final early April)
Provincial football championships From mid-April, finals in May
Provincial hurling championships From mid-April, Leinster and Munster finals early June
Tailteann Cup final July
All-Ireland hurling final (Liam MacCarthy Cup) Mid-July, Croke Park
All-Ireland football final (Sam Maguire Cup) Late July, Croke Park
Club championships After the inter-county season

Formats shift. In 2026 the football round-robin was scrapped for a modified double-elimination knockout of 16 teams, and Congress removed the hurling preliminary quarter-finals. Leinster (six teams) and Munster (five) still run as round-robins in hurling, with the provincial champions straight into the All-Ireland semi-finals. Outright prices on the Liam MacCarthy or the Sam Maguire only make sense once you know which route each county has to take.

How to read a GAA tip on this page

Each selection in the feed names the market, the side and the price available when it was written. A handicap tip at -3.5 is a different bet at -5.5, and GAA lines can jump once a team is named. If the line has gone, the tip has gone with it. Nothing here is a certainty, and anyone selling GAA selections as one is selling something else.

Before a knockout game, check how the bookmaker settles extra time. Most disputes on GAA bets start there.

Readers' questions

Does a GAA match result bet include extra time?
It depends on the bookmaker. Some settle the three-way result on normal time only and others do not, so read the market rules before a knockout game.
How is a two-pointer counted in total points markets?
As two points. A score from on or outside the 40m arc in Gaelic football counts double, so it adds two to the match total. A goal still adds three.
What does -4.5 mean on a GAA handicap?
The county must win by five points or more for the bet to win. The half point removes the chance of a handicap draw.
Do you publish GAA fixtures and results?
No. Official fixtures and results come from the GAA and the county boards. Our feed only carries the games we tip.
