Football tips and predictions are not the same thing
A prediction says what is most likely to happen. A tip says the price on offer is better than the chance. The two part company all the time: a side can be the likeliest winner and still be a poor bet at 1/3, while a draw nobody expects can be worth backing at 3/1. Our football predictions, where we give them, come with that distinction attached.
Each line in the feed shows the selection, the market and the price we saw. To check a return before you stake, use the bet calculator.
League of Ireland betting
The League of Ireland Premier Division runs inside the calendar year, roughly mid-February to late October or early November, a summer season since 2003. Ten clubs play each other four times for 36 games. The bottom club is relegated and the ninth-placed club plays off against the First Division play-off winner. The champions go into Champions League qualifying; second and third, and the FAI Cup winners, go into the other European qualifiers.
That structure shapes the betting. Four meetings a season between the same ten clubs mean familiar opponents and tight prices, and the draw is rarely a price to dismiss out of hand. Late-season matches carry European places and the play-off spot, so motivation counts. The league table is easy to find on the FAI's own pages; we do not reprint it, and the feed only carries the matches we have a view on.
Premier League odds: title, top four and relegation
Premier League betting odds come in two kinds. Match markets (result, both teams to score, goals totals, handicaps) price a single game. Outright markets price a season: the winner, a top-four finish, the bottom three.
Premier League winner odds are usually short at the head of the market and long everywhere else. A worked example: a club at 5/2 to win the title returns EUR 35 from a EUR 10 stake, EUR 25 profit and the stake back. That money is tied up from August to May, which is the hidden cost of any outright.
Relegation betting from the Premier League runs the other way. Twenty clubs play 38 games and the bottom three go down. A club at 6/4 to be relegated returns EUR 25 from a tenner if it goes. Relegation prices react sharply to managerial changes and January signings, so early-season prices and March prices can describe quite different clubs.
| Market | Example price | EUR 10 returns |
|---|---|---|
| Title winner | 5/2 | EUR 35.00 |
| To be relegated | 6/4 | EUR 25.00 |
| Match result, odds-on favourite | 4/6 | EUR 16.67 |
| Draw | 9/4 | EUR 32.50 |
The prices in the table are worked examples for the arithmetic only, not quotes for any club or match.
Champions League odds
Champions League betting odds cover the outright winner and each tie along the way. Outright prices drift and shorten through the league phase as clubs qualify or fall away, and Irish champions enter at the qualifying rounds, so a League of Ireland club in Europe is usually a qualifying-round question rather than an outright one. In two-legged knockout ties, check whether a market is on the 90 minutes of one leg or on which club goes through; those are different bets with different prices.
Accumulators and the cost of each leg
The weekend accumulator is a fixture of the football coupon and one of its most expensive bets. Every leg carries the bookmaker's margin, and the margins multiply. Four selections that each look fair can make a fourfold that is anything but. If you enjoy them, keep the stakes small and know that a single missed leg ends the bet. Our accumulator guide covers doubles, trebles and the full-cover bets.
World Cup football predictions and other international tournaments are mostly ante-post: you stake long before a ball is kicked, and a side that goes out early loses the bet. The same caution applies.
Fixed matches and other things for sale
Search for free football tips and the results soon include pages selling "fixed matches" and guaranteed winners. Match-fixing is a crime, and anyone who truly had a fixed result would not sell it to strangers for a subscription; the subscription is the product. If a tipster's football selections cost money, ask why he is selling them rather than backing them himself.
